Being prepared

Cyclone season runs from November to April, weather conditions can be dangerous and can be very destructive. Find out how to prepare your family, home and pets by visiting the Department of Fire and Emergency Services website.

Flooding 
Low-lying areas can be at risk of storm surge during a cyclone, view our Storm Surge Risk Policy.

DFES will provide storm surge and flood mapping relevant to the cyclone if this situation is likely to impact the City of Karratha. Information will be provided 48 hours before the expected impact of the cyclone, including whether relocation is necessary.   

The City’s storm surge and flood maps are for planning purposes only and should not be relied upon during emergency situations. It is important to refer to DFES for current emergency information.  

If you are in a potential flood zone, please seek shelter in a non-affected area if possible. 


Evacuation

Waste facilities 
It’s important to prepare your home or business during a blue alert. Seven Mile Waste Facility and Transfer Station and the Wickham Transfer Station will remain open during a blue alert. Both facilities will close on yellow alert. 

All kerbside collection services will cease on yellow alert. Residents should bring bins in from the roadside and secure them appropriately. Collections will recommence once an All Clear alert has been issued.

Pre-cyclone verge collection 
The City conducts free pre-cyclone verge collection before each cyclone season. 


Flights 
Karratha Airport will close one hour before a red alert is issued by DFES.
