The Red Dirt Backyard Ultra (RDBU) is the only remote backyard ultra in WA and is a form of ultramarathon set around a 6.71km loop course (or yard as it is known in the Backyard Ultra world), where participants run a loop on the hour, every hour for an unlimited amount of time. They stop for food and rest only in the spare time before starting the next loop and continue until there is only one participant left – known as the Last One Standing (LOS). Everyone else is deemed a DNF or Did Not Finish.
RDBU is a participation event for each entrant to chase their own personal goals whether it be having a go, or striving to see how far you can go, in an atmosphere of comradery, encouragement and community spirit. In 2024, there were 100 entrants in the RDBU, and the event was won in 33 hours by Australian athlete Phil Gore, the current Backyard Ultra world champion. RDBU is an official backyard ultra event, affiliated with the international backyard ultra race series.
