Proposed 2026/27 rates model open for community comment

The City is now inviting submissions from the community after the Council endorsed the proposed rating model for the 2026/27 financial year.

Each year, the City of Karratha identifies what needs to be delivered from essential community services, and maintaining and improving facilities to progressing priorities set out by the community and the City’s guiding document, the Council Plan.

With inflation currently sitting at 3.7 per cent nationally and 4.9 per cent in Perth, the City has carefully considered a range of scenarios.

The preferred option proposes a 4 per cent increase for Gross Rental Value (GRV) properties and a 6 per cent increase for Unimproved Value (UV) properties.

This would see the Rate in the Dollar for residential properties increase to 0.058027 compared to last year’s 0.055795.
The proposed model would generate approximately $69.5 million in rates in the 2026/27 financial year.

City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the City was mindful of broader economic conditions, particularly inflation and its impact on operating costs.

“Like households and businesses, the City is facing increasing costs, and we’ve worked hard to keep any increases as low as possible while continuing to deliver the services and infrastructure our community relies on,” Mayor Scott said.

“The proposed rate adjustments are broadly aligned with inflation and our Long Term Financial Plan, and are designed to reduce reliance on reserves while maintaining financial sustainability.

“Importantly, the proposed model enables the City to deliver the services and facilities the community has told us are a priority, while ensuring we can continue to plan responsibly for future growth and maintain the assets our community relies on.

“This proposed model is now open for public comment, and we appreciate your feedback that will be used to help inform the final rates model.”
