Karratha stalwart and former Mayor named Honorary Freeman for his years of service and dedication to the town.
Peter Long has been in Karratha for over 30 years and has been heavily involved in the community’s vibrancy, economic development and active participation in local community initiatives.
He is the fourth person to be provided with Freeman honours, following Mr BR Sharpe, Mr WA Leslie and Mr J Lally.
During his time in Karratha, Mr Long was a councillor for the Karratha Ward when it was the Shire of Roebourne from 2011-2013 and a further 10 years as the inaugural Mayor of the City of Karratha from 2013 - 2023.
He played a large role in driving community-focused projects which have had a profound impact on Karratha, Dampier, Roebourne, Wickham, and Point Samson.
Beyond his Mayoral responsibilities, Mr Long has contributed significantly to community organisations and initiatives, including chairing the Pilbara Universities Centre, and the North West Defence Alliance.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said he was privileged to bestow the title of Honorary Freeman to Mr Long.
“It is a rarity to bestow the title of Honorary Freeman and it is an honour to present Peter with this title,” Cr Scott said.
“His commitment to Karratha and the Pilbara has played a large role in Karratha becoming the City it is today and the great reputation we have at all levels of government.
“Thank you Peter for your dedication and hard work through all these years.”
