Presented by the City of Karratha with Principal Partner Rio Tinto, the highly anticipated Cossack Art Awards continues to be a key event on the regional arts calendar.
This year’s public program will begin with the invitation only Gala Awards night held on 18 July where the category winners will be announced.
Then on 19 July the exhibition will open to the public with the family friendly Art in the Park, featuring engaging art activities such as Ngarluma Ngurra – Bajinhurrba Workshop run by Melanie from Cora-Larni Enterprise, live music and even bouncy castles for the children.
Throughout the exhibition period of 19 July to 9 August, a series of events and workshops will be held in Cossack, including a special performance of TJAABI: Flood Water by Patrick Churnside, BYO paint and sip and Gyotaku: Fish Printing Workshops.
Cossack Artist in Residence Jenna Pickering will also be hosting a series of workshops, walking participants through portrait painting techniques, finding your own style and even learning how to work with rogue canvases.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the Cossack Art Awards were one of the Pilbara’s premier cultural events.
“This year’s Public Program offers something for everyone, whether you’re an experienced artist, looking to learn a new skill, interested in local history or simply wanting to enjoy a great day out with family and friends,” Mayor Scott said.
“From hands-on workshops and live performances to family activities and evening entertainment, the program provides even more opportunities for people to connect with art, culture and the unique heritage of Cossack.”
The program also includes Dark Corners, evening performances by Ross Vegas combining storytelling, light projection and historical narratives to bring the town’s past to life.
Returning after a successful launch last year, is Cossack Art After Dark, a free night-time event featuring live music from Shmoné and Ozone Street, art activations, late night access to the exhibition, and a licensed bar.
The public program and exhibition will wrap up with Fortescue Children’s Art Day, a free community event featuring children’s activities, the Sensory Shack, food vendors, live entertainment, and the announcement of the Cossack Children’s Art Award Winners.
Mayor Scott encouraged community members and visitors to secure their tickets early and make the most of the diverse range of events on offer.
“The Public Program has continued to grow each year and has become an important part of the overall Cossack Art Awards experience,” Mayor Scott said.
“I encourage everyone to explore the program, book their tickets and join us in celebrating art, creativity and community in one of Western Australia’s most iconic historic towns.”
