City welcomes expanded regional flight network

The City of Karratha welcomes the news of a new, expanded, affordable regional flight network to service Pilbara and surrounding areas.

Nexus Airlines, launched by Aviair, will connect the Kimberley, Pilbara, and Mid-West regions through the Local and WA State government-supported Inter Regional Flight Network.

The City has supported Aviair and the IRFN since its inception in 2019, and in November Council endorsed a motion to support the expansion of the Inter Regional Flight Network with services commencing in July 2023.

As part of the agreement, the City has extended its partnership with Aviair until 2027, and will see the introduction of a 76 seater plane and three services per week supporting businesses and residents to move within the state without having to travel to Perth.

The expanded IRFN has been supported by the WA State Government as well as Local Governments, including the City of Karratha, Town of Port Hedland, City of Greater Geraldton, and the Shire of Broome.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said providing residents with increased access to other regional centres was crucial to making Karratha the most liveable regional City.

“The expansion of the Inter Regional Flight Network with Nexus Airlines will positively impact residents, providing locals greater access to regional locations,” Cr Long said.

Mayor Long said the City had supported inter-regional flights since the network’s inception.

“We are proud to have supported Aviair and the IRFN since its launch and to see its continued growth in the ability to service our region,” Cr Long said.

“Not only will it give our residents the chance to fly to more places, but it is also an opportunity to bring in tourists to our fantastic region.

“With more flights available, families, tourists and businesses will have more opportunities to travel to Karratha.”

Fares are now on sale today for travel from July onwards.
