City library initiative wins state-wide award

A City of Karratha libraries initiative to digitally preserve the community’s memories has received a state-wide award.

The City of Karratha was awarded the Library Board Award for Innovation and Collaboration last night for the 'Memory Preservation Station' project.

The Memory Preservation Station project was launched in April and provides locals the chance to convert precious memories to digital files.

This month the State Library of Western Australia announced the City of Karratha as a winner of its Metropolitan or Large Regional Communities category.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said it was fantastic for the Karratha library to be recognised for its innovative project.

“Our Memory Preservation Project is an opportunity for community members to turn their precious memories from photos, videos, cassettes, floppy disks and more by converting into digital files,” Cr Long said.

“By doing this it preserves these memories forever and provides locals with security that these previous moments will not be forgotten.

“This award is a fantastic achievement for our Libraries team and I’m very proud of our staff for championing this effort.”

The station is currently located at the Karratha Library and two hour slots can be booked each Wednesday between 10.00am - 4.00pm.
