This year the theme is ‘50 Years Deadly’, celebrating five decades of leadership by the National NAIDOC Committee. This milestone recognises the Committee’s crucial role in amplifying Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, culture, advocacy, and achievements across Australia.
NAIDOC Week, running from 5-12 July, will see the City hold a series of events kicking off with the Flag raising ceremony in Roebourne on 6 July, followed by the Waramalgu Markets and Morning Tea at the Ngurin Centre.
Among the other events is The Void Exhibition in which Yindjibarndi artist Melissa Sandy honours her family legacy and reflects on a journey through loss, resilience and hope.
NAIDOC Under the Stars – A Community Celebration will also be held on 11 July in Roebourne, with a mix of cultural performances, children’s activities and live music by Jokeria Blackstone Ramblers and Headlining Billy and the Band.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said NAIDOC Week was one of the most important events in the community calendar.
“The City is proud to support a program of events that celebrates the rich cultures, histories and stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, while creating opportunities for our community to learn, connect and celebrate together.
“I encourage everyone to get involved in the week’s activities and join us in recognising the strength, resilience and leadership that continue to shape our region and our nation.”
The full program of NAIDOC Week events is available on the City of Karratha website.
