Karratha Leisureplex and Brolga Meander Playground upgrades

Karratha Leisureplex Play Space and Brolga Meander Park playground are important recreational spaces for local families, providing opportunities for play, social connection, and outdoor activity.

The City of Karratha is undertaking upgrades to both playgrounds to replace ageing equipment and improve safety, accessibility, and overall usability for the community. These upgrades have been informed by community consultation undertaken in 2024 and form part of the City’s Playground Strategy.

The project will include minor demolition, installation of new playground equipment, and associated hard and soft landscaping. All new equipment will be installed within existing shade structures where applicable.

These upgrades will deliver modern, engaging, and inclusive play spaces that support early childhood development and active outdoor lifestyles.

Works are scheduled to commence from 18 May 2026, with an expected construction period of approximately four weeks, aiming for completion by late June 2026, weather permitting.

During construction, both playgrounds will be closed and fenced off for safety. Minor disruptions to parking at both locations is possible and traffic management may be present.

Will there be closures or access impacts?

Yes. Both playgrounds will be fully closed and fenced off during construction to ensure public safety.  Minor disruptions to parking areas may occur. Traffic management may be utilized at specific times to allow safe passage for the public.

Will the new playground equipment be installed under shade?

All new playground equipment will be installed within the existing shade structures where applicable.

Why can’t the old playground equipment be reused or donated?

Once removed, the existing equipment cannot be safely reused or donated as it no longer meets current Australian Standards and compliance requirements. For safety and liability reasons, it must be fully decommissioned and disposed of appropriately.

How can the community access alternative play spaces?

While works are underway, community members are encouraged to visit nearby parks including Frank Butler Community Park, Kevin Richards Memorial Park, Baynton West Park, Pegs Creek Park and Millars Well Park.

What disruptions should residents expect?

Residents and visitors may experience temporary disruptions including construction noise, increased vehicle movement, and changes to parking and access arrangements. These impacts will be short-term and managed to minimise inconvenience where possible.

Will access to the Karratha Leisureplex be maintained?

Yes. Access to the Karratha Leisureplex will be maintained throughout the works, although minor car parking disruptions may occur at specific times adjacent to the KLP play space.

What improvements will the community see once the project is complete?

The upgraded playgrounds will feature new, modern equipment designed to be safer, more accessible, and inclusive for a wide range of users. The refreshed spaces will enhance the overall play experience and provide improved environments for families to gather and enjoy.

Will sand be replaced with soft fall?

Most existing sand surfaces will be replaced with rubber soft fall to improve accessibility, safety, and usability for all playground users.
