City of Karratha advances advocacy efforts for Step Up Step Down facility

The City of Karratha is continuing its advocacy for the establishment of a Step Up Step Down facility within the community.

City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott and councillors met with the Mental Health Commission earlier this week reiterating the urgent need for the facility, which will serve as a crucial bridge between hospital care and community-based mental health support.

“We are actively lobbying for the establishment of the Step Up Step Down facility right here in our city, and we are doing so with a sense of urgency,” said Cr Scott.

“Just this week, myself and fellow councillors had a crucial meeting with the Mental Health Commission, where we strongly advocated for a comprehensive plan encompassing staffing, housing, and the facility itself to ensure its success,” he said.

The advocacy efforts received a substantial endorsement at Wednesday’s parliamentary session, when the Premier reaffirmed his commitment to seeing the facility realised in Karratha.

While acknowledging this milestone, Cr Scott reiterated the City's ongoing commitment to the project's progress.

"Our work does not end here. The City will remain vigilant in monitoring the progress of this project to ensure that it it is completed in the quickest possible time frame," Cr Scott said.

"We are committed to holding all stakeholders accountable and ensuring that the Step Up Step Down facility becomes a reality for the benefit of all residents in need of mental health support in our community.”
