2024 Community Awards winners and highly commended

Local role models and grassroots heroes were celebrated at the annual 2024 City of Karratha Community Awards on January 26.

23 nominations were received across three award categories with winners announced at the community celebration hosted by the City of Karratha and supported by Rio Tinto and Pilbara Ports.

Rhian Ambrosius was named 2024 Citizen of the Year for her outstanding dedication to the community.

Since moving to Karratha in 2013, Rhian has been an active volunteer, serving as a Senior Firefighter at Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services and as an Emergency Management Technician for St John Ambulance Karratha since 2019.

With over 800 jobs attended, including during the 2019-2020 Black Summer, Rhian goes beyond her duties, volunteering for community events like Speedway, FeNaClNG, Santa lolly runs, Youth Cadets, and school visits.

As Lieutenant from 2019-2023, she organised training and collaborated with other emergency services. Rhian volunteered over 1000 hours this year alone with St John Ambulance, mentoring new members and obtaining a Trainer Assessor Qualification.

Passionate about training, Rhian is building a cadet program for the volunteer fire brigade, which will be a stepping stone to becoming a volunteer firefighter.

City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the awards celebrate the community spirit across all the towns within the City of Karratha.

“Let me begin by congratulating and thanking each of our nominees and award winners,” he said.

“Thank you for your unwavering commitment to our community and for contributing to the improvement of the liveability of our towns.

“These awards are an opportunity for us to shine a light on our unsung heroes in the community who sacrifice their own time to help others and I would like to congratulate everyone who was nominated as well as the winners.”
