City shortlists proposals to boost vital housing stock

A group of eight proposals have been shortlisted as part of plan to urgently address Karratha’s housing crisis.

Australia is in the grip of a housing crisis. Karratha leads the nation with an annual rise of 37.5 per cent in rent prices, reaching a median weekly rent of $1100.

Earlier this year, Council sought expressions of interest from developers and builders to partner with and deliver housing solutions across the City’s supply of undeveloped, development-ready, residential lands in the Karratha town centre.

15 proposals were received with eight selected for shortlisting for further consideration.

City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said this was an important first step in boosting housing stock in the region.

“The community has identified housing as their number one issue, and over the years the City has done what it can to address this, including building properties on lazy lands, and providing subsidised housing for service workers,” Cr Scott said.

“This Housing EOI process is part of our plans to try and address the immediate housing crisis in our community and shortlisting these proposals will allow City officers the opportunity to further investigate and analyse them.

“These proposals will now be assessed by our staff and presented to Council where a decision on the number of proposals approved will be made.”
