The City of Karratha welcomes the funding announcement to support the delivery of Mulataga and boost housing availability in the region.
The $21.1m funding was announced on January 9 as part of the Housing Support Program and will fund headworks to deliver the first 130 lots of the Mulataga subdivision.
There is currently a shortfall of 1200 properties in Karratha which is expected to increase to 2000 over the next five years.
Mulataga has capacity for 1270 residential lots and revenue generated from the lots would be reinvested supporting future phases ensuring a sustained pipeline of housing supply that meets the long-term needs of Karratha and Australia's economy.
The announcement comes on the back of advocacy efforts by the City on behalf of the community about the housing problems in Karratha.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the funding was a welcome step forward for Karratha.
‘We have been working hard as a council to encourage government to give back and feed the Golden Goose,” Cr Scott said.
“This announcement is a positive step forward for our City, but the investment shouldn’t stop at an election, Karratha needs a steady stream of community investment to realise its potential.”
