Kevin Richards Memorial Oval redevelopment takes next step

27 Nov 2019

An extensive upgrade of sporting and recreational facilities in Millars Well has progressed to the next stage after Council accepted a concept plan in October.

The Kevin Richards Memorial Oval concept plan features a suite of staged improvements, including pavilion refurbishment, play space redevelopment, new change room construction, Karratha Kats Football Club clubrooms expansion, carpark formalisation, sports lighting replacement, repositioning the Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service running track, three multipurpose hardcourts, the provision of space and services for a Men’s Shed, and landscaping.

The concept plan was developed following Council’s endorsement of a proposed masterplan in October 2018.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said getting the technical and design planning process underway was the next step towards commencing construction of the major redevelopment.

“Council is pleased to see this important project moving ahead,” Cr Long said.

“Many community groups and clubs use this site and this redevelopment will greatly improve the useability and functionality of the facilities now and into the future.

“Plans for this project have been developed in close consultation with a number of key community and sporting groups who will continue to provide feedback as the technical and design planning process proceeds, including options for the location of the Men’s Shed.”

A detailed design of the entire site including the estimated project cost, proposal of staged works and a construction timeline will now be prepared.

The City of Karratha has allocated $875,000 to the Kevin Richard Memorial Oval redevelopment in the 2019/20 budget to be used for the technical and design stage, infrastructure works and the first stages of construction. Council has secured $900,000 funding from the State Government.
