Kevin Richards Memorial Oval redevelopment moves ahead

02 Jun 2020

The revitalisation of Kevin Richards Memorial Oval is one step closer after Council accepted a tender for the detailed design at the May Council meeting.

The design consultant Peter Hunt Architects will progress the feasibility of the concept plan endorsed by Council in October, and develop a proposal for the staged delivery of improvements under the master plan.

The concept plan proposed a suite of upgrades to the sporting and recreational precinct. They include the play space redevelopment, new change rooms, pavilion refurbishment, Karratha Kats Football & Sporting Club clubroom expansion, car parking works, sports lighting replacement, repositioning the Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service running track, extending and refurbishing multipurpose hardcourts, and the provision of space and services for a Rotary Club Men’s Shed.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said Council was pleased the major project was one step closer to construction getting underway.

“This redevelopment will significantly enhance the sport, recreation and leisure offering in Karratha and it’s great to see it moving ahead,” Cr Long said.

“Plans have been developed in close consultation with a number of community and sporting groups who will continue to provide feedback as it progresses.

“Designs for the play space redevelopment and new change rooms are anticipated to be complete by October, and tenders for these initial works invited by the end of the year.”

An allocation of $1.6 million has been made for the project in the draft 2020-21 budget, with $900,000 secured through Lotterywest and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
