Kevin Richards Memorial Oval to get extensive upgrade
23 Apr 2015
The Kevin Richards Memorial Oval in Millars Well will be able to host Western Australian Football League fixtures under a new plan to improve the functionality of the area.
Construction of a new change room facility, additional storage, upgraded oval lighting and the establishment of grass banks to accommodate spectators are part of the plan.
The existing Millars Well Pavilion will also be converted to a multi-use community facility including a men’s shed, the existing community garden, arts and learning centre and not for profit spaces.
City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the 20-year plan would significantly improve the usability of the area.
“A large number of community groups access and utilise the facilities in this area and Council has been looking into ways to improve its functionality so it is better equipped to accommodate its high usage,” Cr Long said.
“We have developed a long-term plan for the area that will see the staged improvement of existing facilities and construction of a number of new ones, significantly increasing the capacity for the area.”
“The enhanced oval will comply with WAFL grade standards and have the potential to attract tourism and the improved layout of facilities in the area will allow more people to utilise the space in years to come.”
Council has already committed $300,000 towards the project and will consider additional contributions in the upcoming budget as well as external funding sources.
