Oval upgrade seeks funding

21 Sep 2017

The September Ordinary Council Meeting saw the endorsement of planned works for the extensive redevelopment of Kevin Richards Memorial Oval.

A funding application will now seek $1.5 million in support for the project from the State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSCI) 2018/19 Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF).

Masterplan works for the site include redevelopment of the pavilion, a new sports change room, extension of Karratha Kats clubroom, repositioning of the AFL and Cricket ovals, sports lighting upgrade, redevelopment of the current playground and a number of modifications of existing amenities.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said consultation with a number of community groups had resulted in a plan for the Oval that would increase the facilities functionality and capacity both now and into the future.

“We have worked closely with a number of community groups who use this facility including the Karratha Kats Football and Sporting Club, Karratha Roosters Rugby League Club, Karratha Community Association, Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service and a number of other community and sporting groups,” Cr Long said.

“Through these discussions we’ve been able to come up with a masterplan for the Kevin Richards Memorial Oval site that meets current and projected future requirements and we can now begin to seek funding for the implementation of this suite of works,” he said.

“Redevelopment work will increase functionality and capacity of the space, allow for co-location of facilities and services to better support our community groups and increase participation in physical activity.”

The first funding submission for these masterplan works will be submitted immediately with results expected to be announced early in the new year.
