Council supports Balla Balla milestone

24 Mar 2017

The City of Karratha Council has welcomed a major milestone for the Balla Balla infrastructure project with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between BBI Group (BBIG) and China State Construction Engineering Company (CSCEC).

The MOU for the construction of the project was signed between BBIG and CSEC today at a ceremony in Canberra attended by the Australia Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

The $6 billion Project is expected to require approximately 3300-strong workforce during construction and will generate 900 permanent jobs once operations commence.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said he welcomed the news of the major milestone and looked forward to working with BBIG and CSCEC to further progress this significant project for the region.

“This is a major milestone for the Balla Balla Infrastructure project and one that will benefit our region immensely,” Cr Long said.

“The City has been working closely with BBIG during the planning and approvals phases of the project.  City staff and Councilors have been liaising closely with BBIG to identify ways that we can maximize the opportunity for local subcontractors and ongoing operational workers being sourced locally.”

“This project be hugely beneficial to our region, driving the local economy, creating jobs and providing plenty of opportunities for local businesses. We are pleased that today’s announcement reaffirms BBIG’s previous statements about trying to make local procurement a priority for this significant project and will continue to work closely with all parties to ensure the Balla Balla Infrastructure Project remains well positioned to progress forward,” he added.

It is expected BBIG will reach a final investment decision on the project later this year with the intention of starting construction in 2018.
