2018 Walkington Award recipient announced
19 Nov 2018
The Walkington Award commemorates the service of the founding director of North Regional TAFE (previously known as Karratha College and the Pilbara Institute), Doctor Al Walkington.
The purpose of the annual award, valued at $5000, is to encourage local students to continue full-time or part-time tertiary studies at a recognised education institution.
For his achievements, Richard will receive a $5000 bursary from the City of Karratha to be used for tuition fees and to support his studies.
City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the Walkington Award had a proud history of assisting local students to pursue their academic aspirations.
“We have been running the Walkington Award for 34 years now, which gives students in our community a helping hand to further their studies and career goals,” Cr Long said.
“I am always proud to see the hard work in our young people put into their education and the ways they generously give back to our community.”
“It is an exciting time for our education sector, with funding recently secured to establish a Pilbara Universities Centre right here in Karratha so aspiring students can access nationally accredited courses and degrees without having to leave their hometowns.”
Cr Long congratulated this year’s winner and all the applicants.
“Richard is an exceptional leader who volunteers his time mentoring younger students at St Luke’s College and also through soccer,” Cr Long said.
“I wish Richard and all of the 2018 Walkington Award applicants all the best in their future endeavours.”
