City of Karratha Australia Day Awards

Nominations for the 2017 Australia Day Awards are now closed.

You can nominate an individual or a group for one of the six award categories listed below. Please take some time to review the selection criteria to ensure your nominee is placed in the correct category.

  • Environmental Award
  • Community Spirit Award
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Community Service Award
  • Community Event/Activity of the Year


Hard copies of the nomination form are also available at the City of Karratha reception on Welcome Road, Karratha.

The winners of each category will be announced at the Australia Day Awards breakfast ceremony at 9am 26 January at the Karratha Leisureplex. Each category winner will receive a $1000 prize cheque.

The City of Karratha is proud to present the 2017 Australia Day Awards in partnership with Rio Tinto and the support of Horizon Power and Woodside Energy Limited.


Selection criteria

Citizen of the Year
Presented by Horizon Power
A person who is over the age of 25, must be an Australian Citizen who resides in the City, who has either made an outstanding contribution during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the community of the City of Karratha over a number of years.
Criteria:
• Is an Australian Citizen
• Either resides, works or studies in the City of Karratha
• Has either made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years
• Demonstrated commitment to the betterment of the City of Karratha
• Undertakes activities, which have short and long term benefits for others
• Acts as a positive role model for others
• Undertakes activities that promote the welfare and wellbeing of the City of Karratha
• Contributions made by the nominee have been completed on a voluntary basis

Environmental Award
Presented by Woodside-operated North West Shelf Project
Recognises individuals or groups who demonstrate genuine passion for the environment and strive to improve it through conservation, preservation, protection, replenishment and education.
Criteria:
• Must reside within the City of Karratha
• Demonstrated commitment to raising awareness of environmental issues in the community
• Innovative in environmental thinking or sustainable practices
• Contributions made by the nominee have been completed on a voluntary basis

Community Spirit Award
Presented by Rio Tinto
An individual nominated by a City of Karratha Community Association for lifting the spirits of the community.
Criteria
• Must reside within the City of Karratha
• Nomination must be received via a Community Association (Dampier, Karratha, Roebourne, Wickham or Point Samson)
• Demonstrated commitment to the betterment of City of Karratha
• Acts as a positive role model

Young Citizen of the Year
Presented by Woodside Energy Limited
A youth (25 years or younger) who has achieved in his/her chosen field and acts as an inspiration and role model to his/her peers.
Criteria:
• Either resides, works or studies in the City of Karratha
• Positive role model to peers and accepts responsibility for self and others
• Shows outstanding achievement in their chosen field
• Participates in the community
• Active in youth issues
• Positive role model to peers
• Accepts responsibility for self and others
• Undertakes activities that promote the welfare and wellbeing of the City of Karratha
• Contributions made by the nominee have been completed on a voluntary basis

Community Service Award
Presented by Rio Tinto
A group that has either made an outstanding contribution during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the community of the City of Karratha over a number of years.
Criteria:
• Has either made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years
• Undertakes activities, which have short and long term benefits for others
• Acts as a positive role model for others
• Demonstrated commitment to the betterment of City of Karratha
• Can reside elsewhere but works in the City of Karratha (i.e FIFO)

Community Event/Activity of the Year
This award recognises an individual or group who has made outstanding contribution to promoting arts and cultural within the City of Karratha community. Recognises an individual or group who has organised and provided an event for the broader community to attend to enrich the community through activities.
Criteria:
• The event must take place within the City of Karratha
• Must be available to the whole broader community (not 18+)
• Demonstrated commitment to the betterment of the City of Karratha
